Lucy Liu’s character, Jessica Tang, on Southland is one of the most dynamic and irreverent characters I’ve ever seen. Her storyline and priorities did not resemble the majority of those given to female characters- she did not play a love interest, and she wasn’t give one either. Whip smart, unfazed, and sarcastic, she was not annoyingly “awkward,” clumsy, boy-crazy or cutesy. I liked that Liu’s time on Southland was focused on the ethics of balancing duty and ambition. She deserves every award out there for her performance (as does her co-star, the incomparable Michael Cudlitz).
